Superdelegates
"Superdelegate" is the term given to delegates to the Democratic National Convention who are not selected based on primary or caucus results. They are instead chosen or appointed based on their position within the Democratic party. They are free to cast their vote at the national convention for any candidate they choose, and are not bound by the primary vote in their state. Every Democratic Member of Congress is a superdelegate. Other superdelegates may be selected based on their position within the Democratic party.
Superdelegates have gone unnoticed in most election cycles, as one candidate normally wins enough delegates from state primaries and caucuses to win the party's nomination. A total of 2,024 delegates is needed to become the nominee. In this year's race between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, neither candidate has been able to separate themselves from the other to the degree that they can win a majority of delegates from the primary and caucus voting. This means that delegates not bound by those results will become the deciding factor in who the nominee will be.
As of now, the Democratic National Committee has ruled that delegates from Florida and Michigan will not be seated at the national convention.
Below is a listing of which candidates have received the support of superdelegate Members of Congress.
